Risperdal Breast Growth Lawsuits
Risperdal (risperidone) is an antipsychotic medication manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a division of Johnson & Johnson. Risperdal has been linked to many serious side effects including gynecomastia, a condition in which breasts develop in male children and adolescents.
Risperdal Breast Growth Studies
A 2006 study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology reported that adolescents who took Risperdal exhibited significantly high levels of prolactin, a hormone that stimulates milk production and breast development. In 2009, a study published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology found that elevated prolactin levels from Risperdal use could persist for up to two years.
Risperdal Prescribed to Children
Risperdal was approved by the FDA in 1993 for the treatment of schizophrenia and acute mania, which is a term used to describe mixed episodes of bipolar disorder. Risperdal has also been prescribed off-label to treat dementia, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety and autism in children.
