Hockey legend Bernie Parent has opened up about his gynecomastia, a condition in which males develop excessive breast tissue. Parent commented that gynecomastia has affected his way of life and prevented him from enjoying basic experiences, such as going to the beach with his grandkids.
Parent encouraged those affected by male breast growth, including many athletes, to speak up and seek a new type of treatment that does not involve surgery called CoolSculpting, which freezes the excess tissue. Thousands of young boys are also affected by gynecomastia, often time as a result of medication.
As many as 25% of gynecomastia cases are a result of medication use, including the antipsychotic drug Risperdal. Drugs such as Risperdal have been found to increase levels of a hormone known as prolactin for an indefinite period of time, which can lead to excessive breast tissue growth in male adolescents and young boys.
