Georgia teenagers aged 16 to 18 suffered a Risperdal overdose after voluntarily taking two pills of the antipsychotic. The teenagers were taken to the hospital with seizures, muscle spasms, and difficulty breathing after acquiring the drug from an unknown source.
The effects of Risperdal on youth have been highly scrutinized as use of the drug increases, particularly in foster care and among youth with ADHD. Many patients have expressed concern over the link between Risperdal and increased breast tissue growth among boys, or gynecomastia.
Risperdal has been found to indefinitely increase levels of a hormone known as prolactin, which can lead to breast tissue growth in boys and male adolescents. Manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals is facing more than 100 Risperdal lawsuits alleging that the drug led to gynecomastia in male patients.
